Every Genesis game that pushes a lot of sprites has some breakup (like Ranger-X stage 1). but maybe in something like Gunstar Heroes which was pretty sprite intensive.Flicker and sprite breakup is common in 16-bit console games. Can't think of a particular game off the top of my head. Joe: I don't notice it near as much on the Genesis but I've definitely seen it. I thought my memorization of R-Type was good enough to avoid most hazards but those damn invisible bullets! That's kind of a bummer but understandable given the hardware limitations. It won't change my outlook on the system at all - but thought it might be good to hear opinions on the matter. Obviously in a lot of games it only really occurs on 2 player modes (which makes sense). The reason I ask is because I really like playing R-Type and in a lot of the levels enemy bullets just randomly disappear and I run into them.

but - Is there anything that can be done to address it now with mods or is it strictly something you have to deal with in games? I couldn't find anything that said yes but I'm not as knowledgeable as many here on this type of thing. So this is a hardware limitation it seems like. After the eighth sprite on a give line is prepared, any other sprites that need to appear on that line will simply be missing." There is only about 60 millionths of a second for an SMS graphics controller (the display chip that handles the timing of the electrical signals that create images on the screen from numbers in computer memory) to prepare a line of video for display, and only eigth logic circuits (electrical circuits that are able to store, compare and process binary impulses of electricity) are available for each line to prepare a line of sprites. This is because "the system has graphics support that will only display eight sprites on the same horizontal line.
